Established in 1801, The Grafton Inn is one of the oldest continuously operating inns in the United States. As part of the Windham Foundation’s mission, the Inn has been carefully preserved as a living, welcoming place honoring its role at the heart of the Grafton community.
This legacy is only possible because every guest stay and donation directly supports the preservation of this irreplaceable property.

Preservation with Purpose
Every restoration decision is rooted in respect for the Inn’s original architecture, materials, and craftsmanship, while thoughtfully incorporating modern comforts guests expect today. Original features such as wide plank floors are maintained whenever possible, and renovations are approached with care using historically appropriate materials and techniques.
Behind the scenes, we continue to invest in essential upgrades to plumbing, heating and climate systems, and electrical infrastructure. This ensures the Inn remains safe, comfortable, and operational for generations to come.
How the Preservation Fee Works
To support this work, a $30 Preservation Fee per room, per night is applied to each guest stay. This fee directly funds ongoing maintenance, restoration, and stewardship of this irreplaceable historic property.
By staying with us, you are actively supporting the preservation of The Grafton Inn. For those who wish to make an even deeper impact on our historic mission, you may also contribute directly to our preservation fund.

Our Stewardship Approach
The revenue generated by our preservation fee, as well as donations, is continually reinvested into maintenance, restoration projects, and the vitality of the surrounding community. Recent and ongoing investments include:

- The Pine Room Tavern
- The Windham Foundation Room (previously Homestead Room)
- Guest room and bathroom upgrades
- Lobby & Exterior restoration projects
- White Gates Event Barn
- Continued maintenance and infrastructure improvements
